Wildfire Suppression is a new and innovative technology company, which was formed after its founders entered the University of Sydney’s Innovation Challenge, winning the Australian Technology Park Innovations’ BizStart prize.
Phil Koperberg, then the NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner, challenged Sydney University’s School of Aeronautical Engineering to bring greater cost effectiveness and new fire suppression technologies to aerial fire suppression. The Principals of Wildfire Suppression took up the challenge and developed the award winning Fire Suppression Munition (FSM) Technology.
Since that time Wildfire Suppression has received an initial capital injection and developed the technology further receiving design assistance from VIP Packaging, part of Visy Group, one of the world’s largest privately-owned paper recycling and plastics packaging companies, for the development of the Adiabatic Fuse, which is the patented pyrotechnic mechanism that forms part of the FSM device. This design work was undertaken in consultation with the Australian Government’s Workcover Authority, which administers workplace health and safety, subsequently fabricated and successfully tested.
VIP Packaging has continued to provide engineering advice, working with Wildfire Suppression management to select appropriate biodegradable plastics, a VIP Packaging specialisation, for use in the finished FSM device.
